Aquaponics is the combination of raising fish (aquaculture) and growing plants without soil (hydroponics) in a controlled, integrated, natural system organically and sustainably. The fish generates waste which contains rich nutrients that the plants like and the plants take up all the nutrients in the water and leave fresh water back into the tanks for the fish. Hence, using only 5% of the water used in conventional farming.
The fish and plants work together in a system that produces 2 to 4 times the crop yield per acre and use 95 % less water than traditional agriculture.
Fruits and vegetables produced in an aquaponics system are considered to be even healthier than organic since they’re produced in their most natural form possible and without the use of fertilizers.
